Liza Ketchum welcomes the chance to share the stories behind the creation of her books. An experienced teacher, Liza enjoys teaching writing to students of all ages, and frequently speaks to students and professionals about the writing process.
Liza is a founding faculty member of the MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program at Hamline University, in St. Paul, Minnesota.
She has taught writing at the Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at Simmons College, at Emerson College, Vermont College, and at the ASTAL institute in Providence, Rhode Island.
Liza has twice co-led the Whole Novel Workshop in Historical Fiction at the Highlights Foundation in Honesdale, PA.
Skype Visits
While Liza seldom travels for author visits, she is available to speak to elementary through high school students via Skype about her books, and about writing. Please have your students read one or more of Liza’s books before the visit. Students should come up with questions ahead of time. Contact Liza for more information.
Library, Education, and Writing Conferences, and Graduate Seminars
Liza is available as a conference speaker and presenter. She has been a frequent speaker at SCBWI regional conferences, library conferences, social studies conferences, and meetings focused on historical issues. She leads writing retreats and conducts adult classes for writers at all levels.
Liza enjoys lecturing on various aspects of craft. Topics include her popular talks on “Endowed Objects;” “Setting as Character;” “The Writer as Research Detective;” and “Hands On: Writing About Work in Fiction.” In a recent workshop: Liza and author Phyllis Root led a workshop for Hamline Alums entitled “Coming at it Sideways: Tools to Crack Your Stories Open.”
